That's true, but when there were 'bobbies on the beat' who actually came into contact with people they could talk to them and get to know them. In the past a neighbour could have a quick word with a passing policeman and pass on a bit of info. The bobby could act upon the info and probably prevent crime. Now you have to go to the police station, after making an appointment, fill in various forms, and then face revenge attacks from the villains when some prat of a copper lets the newspapers know who it was that helped them with their enquiries. I love modern life.
